The store's grand matriarch, Karen has successfully kept the Tortoise and Hare alive since she purchased it in 1985. Her sweet, caring demeanor has kept the staff united even though most of them are relentless pains in the ass. However, don't let her kindness fool you, she is a shrewd business woman. With the arrival of a second running specialty shop in Ann Arbor the owner of the new store threatened to run her out of town. Ever resilient Karen matched her pricing and her superior service and was able to stay and thrive in the community. She also had a hit squad remove the head of her rivals prize stud and placed in his bed while he slept. In addition to her business she also has her infamous running group whose early morning chatter can be heard anywhere within a three block radius of Zingerman's. Her other hobbies involve finding lost items, scolding Matt and driving like she's on the Autobahn.
